The new leaders of the Georgia Supreme Court provide a mixed bag on gay issues. The state’s highest court announced Friday that Presiding Justice Carol W. Hunstein has been elected as the new chief justice and that Justice George H. Carley was elected as the new presiding justice. Both votes were unanimous, according to the court.
Hunstein will replace Chief Justice Leah Sears, who retires at the end of June. Hunstein and Carley will be sworn in by former Gov. Zell Miller on July 1.
Both Sears and Hunstein have been targeted by conservative opponents for their rulings related to gay issues. In 2006, Hunstein endured gay baiting in her re-election bid against Michael J. Wiggins.
