New York Revokes Marriage License Issued to Gay Couple

The city has revoked the marriage license of two men who obtained it while one of them was dressed as a woman. Same-sex marriage is illegal in New York, but Jason Stenson and Hakim Nelson applied for and received a marriage license in May. During the application process, Nelson, who dresses as a woman, showed a state-issued benefits card, which lists his gender as female. Days later they were married by a city official during a brief ceremony. A spokesperson for the city said Monday the couple’s license has been revoked. Instead, they’ve been registered as a domestic partnership. The city spokesman says the marriage bureau plans to put procedures in place to ensure the mistake isn’t made again.
