Proposition 8 Movie Picked Up for National Distribution

One of Sundance's most controversial films has found a buyer.

ABC 4 News has learned that "8: The Mormon Proposition" has now sold its North American rights to distributor "Red Flag Releasing."

The documentary details the LDS Church's involvement in California's Proposition 8 ballot measure, the successful effort to ban gay marriage there.

James Franco & John Hamm Come Out for Marriage Equality

Kristen Stewart is en route to Sundance (cannot wait!), but so far, it's the dudes who are stirring up the trouble! Specifically, James Franco and Jon Hamm, who star in Howl, which was the opening night selection for the festival. Franco plays Allen Ginsberg, a gay beat poet who was put on trial because his published poems (like "Howl") were apparently deemed obscene, mainly due to the references to drugs and homosexuality. Hamm plays Franco's attorney. When we caught up with the hunks earlier today, we had to bring up what's a pretty good parallel to Howl's depicted trial—Prop 8. Here's what the actors had to say on the most recent court ruling, which made gay marriage illegal in California: "What can you say," Franco, highly exasperated, told us after the Howl press conference. He entered into deep, furrow-browed thought, which he dives into like Sarah Palin does idiocy. "Like I said before when Milk was coming out, I hope we'll get to a time soon where we'll look back and say, 'I can't believe that we were discriminating against this whole group of people and saying, 'You don't have the same rights as everybody else.'" Pretty-boy James continued: "I hope that the time comes very, very soon, when we can all look back and say that was ridiculous." Full Story from E Online

Colin Firth Proud of Gay 60's Movie "A Single Man"

After four changes in the time of the phone call and three disconnects, Colin Firth's distinctive voice finally crackled over the line. He apologized, in advance, for any inarticulate moments to come. It had been a long day, and he had just come off the set of "The King's Speech" in London, where it was 11:30 p.m. and he was now doing phone interviews with reporters in the States. But you could hear him rally as he said, "I'm very happy to be talking to you," and proceeded to be gracious, insightful and articulate about his profession and the movie "A Single Man." It earned him the Best Actor honor at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, nominations for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award and -- just maybe -- his first chance at an Oscar. UT: New Film About Prop 8 Sold Out at Sundance

A Utah State University graduate’s controversial film on the LDS Church and gay marriage has sold out five screenings at the Sundance Film Festival — making it one of the event’s most popular entries. Tickets for “8: The Mormon Proposition” were snapped up before any other Sundance documentary and all but a handful of feature films. A total of 271 movies will screen at the festival, which runs from Jan. 21 to 31. Filmmaker Reed Cowan, a 1997 USU graduate in broadcast journalism, sounded thrilled at the response, writing “WE HAVE A HIT!!!” on the “8: TMP” Facebook page. He also encouraged supporters to contact Sundance about adding more showings. Focused on the 2008 passage of California’s Proposition 8, the documentary has clearly struck a nerve with accusations that a “Mormon front group purchased passage” of the constitutional amendment, which narrowly overturned a court ruling that allowed gay couples to marry.
