THIS WEEK'S WOODY AWARD

This week's Woody award honors goes to Abel and Robbie Ferreira, who live in a gated community with three of their grown children who still live at home. Missus Ferreira drives a Mercedes. These poor folks are so afraid of the horrible people that live outside their gates: "I'm just seeing our morals and everything just deteriorating before us," Robbie said. And her husband said "The Bible is very, very clear . . . that that kind of perversion will not get people into heaven," Abel said. "They're fallen people, broken people, hurting people."

Honestly, I'm not quite sure where to start, here - an over priveleged couple who has thrown themselves into an effort to try to make the world a better place. Not by sharing their wealth with others. Not by raising responsible children who will pull their own weight in the world. And not by volunteering their time at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter.

Nope, these loving Christians are determined to make the world a better place by taking away the rights of gay and lesbian folks in their home state.

It's a sad, pitiful caricature of Christian love. We're sorry for the two of you, truly sorry at how misguided you are, and hope your shared woody award brings you at least a little solace in this cold, cold world.

Runner-up goes to blogger Malcolm Hedges, who writes "We all saw how the gay community reacted when the people of California refused to allow the destruction of marriage and the traditional family. They reacted with violence and hatred but persistently preach tolerance of others." Way to look at things through blood-colored glasses... the only folks who think gay and lesbian couples want to destroy marriage and families are right-wing wackjobs like Mister Hedges. How about the very real emotional destruction caused by the yes on 8 folks against couples like my partner and I, who lost months of sleep agonizing over this attack on our rights in the name of Christianity? My grandfather, a Christian minister, would be ashamed of you. No woody for you.

It's a movement of progress - and your words on Fox News only show how truly desperate you are to maintain control of a world that is changing before your very eyes. Then again, we've seen these tactics before. We know how much the right likes to play political and cultural hardball, and then turn around and accuse us of lashing out first. You give a pass to a religious group - one that looks down upon minorities and women - when they use their money and membership roles to roll back the rights of others, and then you label us 'fascists' when we fight back. --Darren Hayes (Savage Garden): "Just so we are clear, this is our definition of marriage: We want to grow old together. We love each other so much that we want to share our lives together, forever. We are monogamous. We're faithful. We're in it for the long haul. Sometimes we argue over who's turn it is to make a cup of tea, but for the most part we are soul mates. If, God forbid, one of us should fall ill, one of us will take care of the other one. If, God forbid, one of us should pass away suddenly, we would want our estate to go to the one of us who survives. We'd like other stuff too, like, you know, the same tax breaks as other married couples and the civil rights you would extend any other committed couple in the free world.
