A Utah State University graduate’s controversial film on the LDS Church and gay marriage has sold out five screenings at the Sundance Film Festival — making it one of the event’s most popular entries. Tickets for “8: The Mormon Proposition” were snapped up before any other Sundance documentary and all but a handful of feature films. A total of 271 movies will screen at the festival, which runs from Jan. 21 to 31.
Filmmaker Reed Cowan, a 1997 USU graduate in broadcast journalism, sounded thrilled at the response, writing “WE HAVE A HIT!!!” on the “8: TMP” Facebook page. He also encouraged supporters to contact Sundance about adding more showings.
Focused on the 2008 passage of California’s Proposition 8, the documentary has clearly struck a nerve with accusations that a “Mormon front group purchased passage” of the constitutional amendment, which narrowly overturned a court ruling that allowed gay couples to marry.
