ME: High School Student Organizes Gay Marriage Rally

Who can marry and who can’t comes down to who has a Y chromosome and who doesn’t, a Bangor High School student told a crowd of more than 60 people gathered Sunday in Pickering Square in support of same-sex marriage in Maine. “What is the difference between a man and a woman getting married and two men or two women getting married?” Antonia Carroll, a 16-year-old junior, asked. “It’s that Y chromosome or lack thereof in one of the partners. Who cares about Y chromosomes?” Carroll organized the rally for people who volunteered for the recent No on 1 campaign. She was one of about 20 high school students, not yet old enough to vote, who attended the event. Carroll and others spoke emotionally about the Nov. 3 repeal of the same-sex marriage law by a vote of 53 percent to 47 percent. Religious Coalition Gathers in Maine to Support Gay Marriage

Faith leaders from the Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry in Maine gathered in Portland and Bangor on Thursday to support the state’s same-sex marriage law. Members of the coalition said only marriage equality confers full dignity and respect to loving and committed gay and lesbian couples. “Marriage creates and enhances stable, committed relationships and the sharing of economic resources and responsibility. Marriage nurtures the individual, the couple, and children,” Rabbi Darrah Lerner of Congregation Beth El in Bangor, said in a news release. “Good marriages benefit our communities and express our religious values of long-term commitment and faithfulness.” Full Story from Bangor Daily News: http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/123352.html

Maine Church Stands Up for Gay Marriage

I serve as pastor to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor, a church with a long history of supporting justice and equity in our community. We who serve congregations often find it a humbling experience for we know it has little to do with us; it has to do with serving something greater than ourselves. But alongside that humility there is pride. Not personal pride, but pride in the congregation, which actually is living out the real principles of our faith. In other words, I am proud of my congregation for “walking their talk.” In April, before the state Legislature’s passage of the equal marriage bill, my congregants unanimously passed a resolution in favor of same-sex marriage.
