Maryland AG May Open Door for Recognition of Out of State Gay Marriages

Hopes are high that Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler will soon issue a legal opinion that same-sex marriages performed outside the Free State should be recognized in Maryland. Raquel Guillory, director of communications for Gansler’s office, said Tuesday that a decision is “expected in the next few weeks.” Legal experts and gay Marylanders this week told the Blade they were hopeful that Gansler’s decision would favor gay and lesbian couples. David Rocah, an American Civil Liberties Union staff attorney, said Maryland law is “quite clear that out-of-state [same-sex] marriages should be recognized just like other out-of-state marriages are recognized, even though they couldn’t be entered into in Maryland under Maryland law.” Full Story from the Washington Blade
