Group Trying to Overturn El Paso's New Domestic Partner Benefits Law

A group of about 10 pastors, parents, grandparents and taxpayers said today that it is launching a petition drive to overturn the City CouncilĀ¹s decision to extend health benefits to gay and unmarried heterosexual partners of municipal employees. The goal is to get the council to reconsider its decision to include so-called domestic partner benefits in the new city budget that took effect on Sept. 1. The group said it would like the council to approve an ordinance that would restrict city health benefits to city employees and their spouses and children. The group's idea for the ordinance is this: "The city of El Paso endorses traditional family values by making health benefits available only to city employees and their legal spouse and dependent children."
