India: Gay Prince to Marry Partner in Nepal

Manvendra Singh Gohil, the openly-gay Indian prince, is set to marry his partner in a ceremony in Nepal, raising hopes that the war-ravaged country will begin to rake in business from gay tourists.

Prince Gohil, who rose to international attention after appearing on Oprah and the BBC publicizing his search for a lover, plans to marry his Nepalese partner Pajwal Miskin in a Hindu ceremony in Kathmandu.

Nepal’s tourism industry ground to a halt after a brutal decade-long civil war that ended in 2006. In 2008, Nepal’s Supreme Court ordered the government to enact laws to guarantee the rights of gays and lesbians after bowing to pressure from the Blue Diamond Society, run by parliament member and gay-oriented travel mogul Sunil Babu Pant. The country’s new constitution is currently being drafted and is expected to define marriage as a union between two adult individuals, regardless of gender, and to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Nepal: Gay Marriage in May, Weddings on Everest?

Nepal is set to stage same-sex weddings on Mount Everest as part of a bid to promote the country as the gay tourism capital of Asia. According to a report in The Telegraph, Nepal's homosexual community will host a tourism conference next month to explore how to attract wealthy gay visitors to boost the country's war-ravaged economy. The country's new constitution will legalise gay marriage in May this year, when "Pink Mountain" will begin offering luxury honeymoon and wedding packages. The paper further says that Sunil Babu Pant, a Communist legislator and leader of the country's gay rights movement, has launched a travel company dedicated to promoting the former Hindu kingdom to gay tourists in an effort to tap the so-called "Pink Pound" and dollar. Nepal: Gay Member of Parliament Forms Tourism Agency for Gays, Lesbians

Nepal’s first and only openly gay member of parliament, who is also the founder of the gay rights movement in the conservative republic, has offered a wedding and honeymoon package to Indian icon for the sexual minorities, Manvendra Singh Gohil, the crown prince of Rajkot. Sunil Babu Pant, who was nominated to Nepal’s newly elected parliament after a historic election last year, has formed the country’s first tourist agency for gays, lesbians and transgenders, and has obtained the blessings of Tourism Minister Sharad Singh Bhandari to promote Nepal as a holiday destination where sexual minorities can combine weddings with adventure tourism. Pink Mountains Travels and Tours, registered under the ministry of small-scale industries, has already received a booking from an American lesbian couple who want to travel to Nepal in 2011 and marry there while a second couple, featuring a Filipino and an Arab in Dubai, have been in touch, saying they would book as soon as Nepal gets new laws legalising same-sex marriages.
