NY: Gay Activists Crash Senator Monserrate's Christmas Party

Some activists aren't allowing state senator Hiram Monserrate to forget the anti-gay marriage vote he stuffed in the Christmas stockings of gay and lesbian New Yorkers. On the anniversary of Monserrate slashing his girlfriend's face, activists from The Power crashed the senator's Queens Christmas party before being escorted out. Shouted the activists, "Hiram's a wife beater! He can get married and we can't! How can wife beaters get married and we can't? Hiram believes marriage believes marriage should be between one man, one woman, and a broken bottle." NY: Gay Activists to Fight to Remove Democrats Who Betrayed Gay Marriage Vote

The rhetoric is ratcheted up to 11 after last week's overwhelming rejection of same-sex marriage in the state Senate, which left gay-rights activists reeling. "It's going to be a bloodbath," one gay "operative" tells the Daily News. "We're going to use every single weapon in our quiver to take these people out. We either need to replace them or scare the hell out of them so they do the right thing." Activists say they'll focus their efforts on the Democrats who they feel betrayed them, and number one on the list of Senator Joseph P. Addabbo of Queens. Some analysts believe that because the alphabetically-advanced Addabbo voted second in the roll call, his "no" sent a message to subsequent swing voters that the measure would not pass, creating a domi-no effect. Addabbo has sought to draw a line between his personal opinion on same-sex marriage (which he refuses to divulge) and the will of his constituency. Speaking to reporters about his vote, he said: "To this day, I have kept my personal belief out of it, and it's still personal...It is my belief, and it's only my belief. I voted, again, the will of the people in my district. First and foremost, I am very thankful to everyone who got me to where I am as a state senator. I am grateful to all those in the gay community that supported me—whether it be financially or with the hours of volunteer work. I'm grateful to them, but never once did I say to anyone or any particular entity what my position was on the issue..." NJ: Students and Activists Rally for Gay Marriage

Despite the cold and rain, student activists and advocates for marriage equality gathered on the steps of the New Jersey Statehouse yesterday morning to voice their support for New Jersey's gay marriage proposal. "Marriage equality is not just about marriage, it's about civic equality," said Mike Tracey, a student from The College of New Jersey in Ewing. "It's about love. Let's hear it for love." The crowd of more than 100 people cheered back eagerly, some waving signs that read, "Separate But Equal is NOT EQUAL." The rally was put together by TCNJ's Students For Equality group. The New Jersey legislature is expected to take up marriage equality legislation this week, Sen. Ray Lesniak, D-Union, told a crowd of supporters outside the statehouse Thursday afternoon. Rhode Island Governor to Meet With Gay Marriage Group

Outgoing Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri has agreed to meet in early November with a group of gay and lesbian activists, but proceeded to speak out against gay marriage at a fundraiser for a Massachusetts group opposed to gay and lesbian rights. Carcieri told the group that marriage is “not a civil right.” Last month, gay rights group Queer Action Rhode Island asked the Republican governor to cancel a scheduled appearance before the anti-gay group Massachusetts Family Institute (MFI) at its 18th Annual Fundraising Banquet.
