A coalition of local LGBT groups were finalizing plans this week for a Marriage Equality Convocation scheduled to be held in the District Sept. 30 to build support for a same-sex marriage bill expected to be introduced in the City Council within the next few weeks.
Rev. Eric Lee, president and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles and chair and president of the California Christian Leadership Conference is scheduled to be among the speakers at the Convocation, set to take place 7 p.m. at the historic True Reformer Building at 1200 U St., N.W.
Lee, who supports same-sex marriage, has been praised by LGBT activists in California for his strong and vocal opposition to Proposition 8, the ballot measure approved by California voters last year that bans same-sex marriage in the state.
