State election workers checked 5,926 signatures during the day Friday for Referendum 71, the effort to overturn Washington's new "everything but marriage" same-sex domestic partner law.
The daily signature rejection rate was 12.91 percent, but the secretary of state's office said earlier Friday that the signature "error" rate is changing as the count goes on. That's because some signatures initially rejected are later accepted upon further review. For a detailed explanation check out the secretary of state's blog.)
The first few daily reports indicated that R-71 error rates were likely too high for the measure to qualify for the November ballot. Now it's hard to say. Election officials say they hope to complete the full signature check by Aug. 17.
