National March on Washington for Gay Rights, Gay Marriage, Set for October 11th
Activists from across the country are solidifying plans for a March on Washington, despite objections from others in the LGBT rights movement who criticize the timing of such of an event and say it diverts resources from other important tasks.
Longtime gay activist Cleve Jones, who called for the march at a Utah Pride event in June, said in an interview July 31 that the steering committee for the march, now known as the National Equality March, has been working on dividing responsibility, negotiating with authorities and increasing outreach.
Jones, a protégé of gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk, said the march affords considerable opportunity to the LGBT community.
