El Paso, TX Plans to Offer Insurance Coverage to Gay/Lesbian Employees' Partners; 25 Protest

About 25 people today spoke against the city government's plan to offer health insurance coverage to gay and unmarried partners of city employees. Most of the objections were to the city providing benefits to gay people. Protesters said the plan was an attack on marriage between one man and one woman. About 45 city employees have gay or unmarried heterosexual partners who would be eligible for the coverage. The city's total workforce numbers about 6,100. Spouses of those workers already are eligible for city health benefits. Full Story from El Paso Times
