Governor Felix Camacho says he wasn't aware of Vice-Speaker B.J. Cruz's same-sex civil union bill, introduced at the request of the Guam Youth Congress. This bill, which would allow for members of the same gender to be joined in a civil union, has already drawn strong opposition from Archbishop Anthony Apuron. In a release to the media, the leader of the island's Catholic community, "The Catholic Church, on Guam and universally, is opposed to any legislation, which attempts to legalize relationships between individuals of the same-sex as civil unions akin to the institution of marriage."
While the Catholic Church is strongly opposed to same-sex civil unions, there are strong advocates for the bill. Alternative lifestyle association public relations officer Dee Dee Babauta says the bill is not a religious issue, but rather something intended to create equality. "I respect the archbishop's comments," she noted. "The archbishop also preaches compassion and respect, but I just want to stress that the bill is not intended to offend the Catholic Church's position on marriage; the proposed legislation's intention is to enhance the livelihood of people who do not have the same equal rights as heterosexual couples."
