Gov. Paterson's administration has reached out to a surprising new ally in its quest to convince Senate Republicans to vote "yes" on the governor's bill to legalize gay marriage: former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno.
Bruno has yet to agree to lobby his old colleagues but is "considering" siding with pro-marriage advocates, a source familiar with the discussions revealed. If he does get involved, it would signal the end of a long evolution for the former staunch conservative who once referred to homosexuality as an "abnormal lifestyle."
Bruno resigned his state Senate seat last summer and is now a registered lobbyist. He is fighting federal corruption charges stemming from a three-year FBI investigation into his outside business interests.
