NJ: Profile of Len Deo, Man Spearheading Fight Against Gay Marriage

Len Deo was attending Parsippany High School's back-to-school night in 1993 when a health teacher noted that parental consent was not required for a teenager to get an abortion. The married father of three was dismayed by the comment, though it accurately reflected New Jersey law. He said it inspired him to launch the New Jersey Family Policy Council in 1995 as a vehicle for "traditional family values." Within two years, Deo segued from the family business, a local florist shop in Parsippany, and became the council's full-time director. He lobbied against late-term abortion and in favor of parental notification, two legislative battles that drew attention to the council in the late 1990s.
