Now that the University of Alabama’s sister schools have decided to provide domestic partner benefits, many members of the UA community hope the Tuscaloosa campus will follow suit.
“Of course, with gay marriage not being legal in the state of Alabama, we’re looking at any kind of terminology that will make it possible on this campus,” said Ben Henson, president of Capstone Alliance, UA’s faculty and staff group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. “We’re just trying to get some chance at doing the same thing.”
Henson considers the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s implementation of domestic partnership benefits a positive step in securing rights for UA employees, and Capstone Alliance, along with other campus employee and student groups, is working to present to the administration a package of letters in support of the change.
