Gay marriage advocates and opponents were out in force in Augusta on Sunday at separate rallies for and against Question 1, a referendum appearing on the ballot in November that would strike down the new law legalizing same-sex marriage in Maine.
The "Yes on 1" campaign held a private rally Sunday night at the Augusta Civic Center to discuss their strategy to win the vote in November. The event was closed to the public, and only prescreened people with tickets were allowed to attend.
Meanwhile, the "No on 1" campaign held a rally on their own on Sunday, calling it a "community conversation" aimed at engaging and informing the public on the issue. Other community conversations are planned for the weeks leading up to the November 3 vote.
