On Monday the California Assembly approved a resolution urging the United States Congress and President Barack Obama to repeal the nation’s Defense of Marriage Act following a contentious, partisan debate.
The resolution, AJR 19, was sponsored by Assembly members Julia Brownley (D-Santa Monica) and Mike Feuer, (D- Los Angeles). The resolution had 43 co-authors, indicating strong, if partisan, support.
Despite that support, not even the fight over the state’s prison reform legislation later in the session could match the bitter, at times personal, attacks by conservative opponents against AJR 19 and its supporters, in speeches that ritually invoked the 52 percent passage of prop 8 as proof that Californians support the nation’s DOMA law.
