A bill supporting the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act faces its first vote today in the state Legislature.
The bill, authored by Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, calls on Congress and the president to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, which forbids federal recognition of same-sex couples. The Assembly Judiciary Committee is expected to vote on the measure at 9 a.m. today, as reported Monday on mydesert.com.
“People shouldn't be treated like second-class citizens for merely falling in love with someone of the same sex,” Brownley said in a statement to The Desert Sun.
