For many gay rights activists in Central New York, last week began with a call to action from the Empire State Pride Agenda. In a "legislative alert" posted on its Web site and broadcast via e-mail last Monday, the statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group urged New Yorkers to call their senators in support of the same-sex marriage bill.
But political maneuvering in Albany later that day plunged those plans into chaos -- as Senate Republicans wrested control of the Senate leadership with the help of two downstate Democrats, Pedro Espada Jr. of the Bronx and Hiram Monserrate of Queens.
It took just minutes for panicky news of the revolt to reach Ralph Valente in Syracuse, where he works out of the home he shares with his partner of four years, Jim Simonis.
