Illonois Assembly Adjourns Without a Vote on Civil Unions Bill

With the Illinois General Assembly’s spring legislative session officially over as of Sunday, proponents of the state’s civil unions bill face a major setback with the House of Representatives’ failure to vote on the proposed legislation. Following a last-minute scramble to build support and push the legislation into the House for a vote last week, the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act was "re-referred to rules committee" on Sunday. This move effectively rendered the bill dead. Senate Bill 1716 (formerly House Bill 2234) had been expedited by sponsor Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago)’s decision to attach the civil union amendment to a "shell bill" already approved by the Senate.
