More than 30 members of Congress have joined hundreds of pastors in an effort to define marriage in the District of Columbia as the union of a man and a woman. The bill, which was introduced in the House Thursday, is meant to thwart this month's Washington city council vote to recognize same-sex "marriages" performed in other jurisdictions.
Congress, which has final say over laws in the nation's capital, has until July to act against the District's measure. Otherwise, it automatically becomes law. The most vocal criticism has come from black ministers like
Bishop Harry Jackson of the High Impact Leadership Coalition. He says what happens in Washington could determine the fate of marriage nationwide.
"For those who are questioning where the battle for same-sex marriage is going to land, where is it going to end -- DC is going to be the Armegeddon, the final battleground, I'm convinced," says Jackson.
