Gay Marriage Watch: August 24th-August 30th

Here's the latest news on gay marriage from around the world. Our favorite tidbit of the week (from The New Republic): Sarah Palin is all about the sanctity of marriage: "Gay marriage, no; Wal-Mart marriage, yes! As mayor of Wasilla, Palin once presided over a wedding in a Wal-Mart." Can't get much more holy than Walmart.

In addition to the news of the week, you'll find our weekly woody award, links to some great articles and columns from the last seven days, and of course you'll also find our ongoing recap of gay marriage happenings worldwide. To subscribe to this blog, or if you have any thoughts about how we can make this feature better or easier to use or any updates on the issues covered here, let me know at info@purpleunions.com.

This Week's Woody Award:

This week's Woody award honors goes to letter writer Joe Bako in Vancouver, who puts forth this gem: "I argue that there are practical limits to equality and sameness" and goes on to compare gay marriage to the colors red and blue, "so fundamentally different that we need two different words to designate them." I'd say mister Bako has a little grammatical problem himself - apparently he thinks equality and sameness mean the same thing. If we would just accept what they give us and shut the hell up, things would be all better. I'm betting the African American community would disagree, and I know the GLBT community does. Enjoy your woody, mister Bako!

Runner up goes to Frank Aquila, resident of Manteca, CA and (surprise) a Republican, who misses the point that gay marriage is a civil right, not a religious mandate, when he writes "The Democrats want to change God’s definition of marriage so homosexuals can be recognized." Note the right-wing use of the word "homosexuals" instead of gays and lesbians. Other chestnuts include "gay agenda", and "alternative lifestyles". Hey, mister Aquila, a lifestyle is what John McCain is living in his seven or eight homes scattered across the country. It's not the way I was born or made by God. Retire the tired cliches and come up with something relevant, or get off the stage, mister Aquila.

By the way, I got an email from last week's woody award runner-up, Morgan Orlins, about my mentioning of him in the blog, and I have to say he's a decent guy who at least argues his case with some logic and in a reasonable way - so while we've agreed to disagree, kudos to Mr. Orlins for being good natured and civil in his arguments.
