Gay Marriage Watch: July 6th-July 12th

Here's the latest news on gay marriage from around the world. Our favorite story of the week - our favorite story of the week, again not specifically gay-marriage related, is the kiss between Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe and Gavin & Stacey's James Corden at the Whatsonstage Awards, explained here. Enjoy! In addition to the news of the week, you'll find our weekly woody award, links to some great articles and columns from the last seven days, and of course you'll also find our ongoing recap of gay marriage happenings worldwide. To subscribe to this blog, or if you have any thoughts about how we can make this feature better or easier to use or any updates on the issues covered here, let me know at info@purpleunions.com. --Scott This Week's Woody Award:

This week's Woody award honors goes to "Dr." (yeah, we know) James Dobson, whose new book proposes "ten arguments against same sex marriage". It's a list of the usual right wing homophobic claptrap that's unique only in that it distills all of their bullshit so neatly into a single page... here you'll find the old "Sweden is spiralling down to hell" chestnut, the "slippery slope to polygamy" claim, the so called "gay agenda to end marriage altogether", the "they're coming for the children" hysteria, and oh, so much more. And it's all neatly debunked here by About.com's Tom Head. Given the virulence of "Dr." Dobson's screed, we have a feeling he'll be enjoying his new woody tonight behind closed (and locked) doors. Glad we could bring a little happiness into your sad little life, James.

Runner-up goes to Linda Turley-Hansen who says "When the minority show little concern for the system that serves the stability of the majority, when desire to attain heterosexual legitimacy overrides what's best for civilization, narcissism comes to mind." Yeah, that's why we're spending millions of dollars and hours fighting for the right to marry - 'cause we're all just a bunch of narcisists. Hmmm, narcissism is defined as "A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem." So by spending our energy fighting for a cause that will help hundreds of thousands of others around us, we're being self preoccupied, unempathetic, and showing our low self esteem, huh? Get a dictionary before you write your next hit piece, Mrs. Turley-Hansen.
