New York Senate Puts Off Gay Marriage Vote, Again

The special session of New York's Legislature on Tuesday yielded no breakthroughs on the top items on the agenda, including a same-sex marriage bill proposed by Gov. David Paterson. According to the Albany Times Union, the governor met privately with Senate Democrats about whether they had enough votes to pass the marriage equality legislation. Paterson later announced, together with gay advocates and state Sen. Thomas Duane, the main sponsor of the bill, that they would put the bill up for a floor vote not that day as proponents and critics had been anticipating, but before the end of the year. Democrats hold a razor-thin majority in the Senate, where a Republican coup in July brought the balance of power to 31-31 and caused a month-long standoff.
