With a state law allowing gay marriage set to go into effect on the first of the new year, new marriage licenses, which allow straight and gay couples equal marriage rights under state law, became available for the first time Monday.
State Rep. Jim Splaine, D-Portsmouth, the primary sponsor of House Bill 436, which created the law, said he was proud and the bigger picture of what the legislation creates is the most important piece of all.
"The entire issue is not about numbers, it's about making sure equality exists," Splaine said, adding he feels New Hampshire's willingness to pass both civil union and marriage laws without pressure from the courts conveyed a good message to the rest of the nation.
