Organizers of the National Equality March on Oct. 11 in the nation’s capital won’t predict how many will participate, but concede that most will come from within a day’s round-trip drive.
"Most people who attend are those who will be able to drive or travel by bus going that morning and driving back that night to avoid the cost of lodging," prominent gay activist and event co-chair Cleve Jones told news media during a conference call Sept. 14. "These are difficult economic times."
While the march is billed as a two-day event the weekend of Oct. 10 and 11, that would mean most attendees would travel from the Northeast and portions of the Midwest and South and not make it to any Saturday events.
