Parks and Recreation Tackles Gay Marriage

Parks and Recreation, NBC's "spin-off" of The Office, didn't do very well in the ratings last season. That would be because former SNL star Amy Poehler's diverse comic talents were wasted playing the role of Leslie Knope, the ambitious but boring new head of the Pawnee, Indiana parks and recreation department (a.k.a. the job nobody wants). The entire first season focused on Leslie's attempts to get a large pit filled in Pawnee that people kept falling into. The season two premiere ditches the pit storyline in favor of Leslie becoming a local gay rights hero. You see, Leslie inadvertently "marries" two male penguins at the Pawnee zoo, immediately making her a gay marriage advocate and a target for local anti-gay Conservatives, who demand her resignation and leave graffiti that says, "It's Flipper and Eve, not Flipper and Steve."
