Gay Marriage Foes Turn in 100,000 Signatures in Maine

Mainers seeking to overturn the state's new law legalizing same-sex marriage cleared a major hurdle on Friday when they delivered 100,000 signatures to the State House in Augusta. The number well exceeds the 55,087 needed to place a veto measure on the November ballot. The seemingly arbitrary number is 10% of the number of Mainers who voted in the most recent gubernatorial election, which is the amount the state law requires to initiate a people's veto. The veto effort began in May when Governor John Baldacci signed same-sex marriage into law in. "Stand for Marriage Maine" spearheaded the signature drive. In a press conference at the State House this morning, they celebrated what they consider to be overwhelming support for the repeal of the law. Full Story from The Examiner
