At one time, Candace Gingrich was happy being a “politically ignorant dyke” living in Pennsylvania, working at UPS and playing softball and rugby.
But when her half-brother, then-Congressman Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), rose to power in the GOP ranks, some of that limelight shone on her, the lesbian sister of a very socially conservative politician.
Newt Gingrich was elected to the U.S. House representing Georgia’s Sixth District in 1978 and held the post for 20 years, earning a reputation as a man who spouted “traditional family values” — despite being divorced three times — with no room for gay people. He became a national GOP leader after orchestrating the party’s “Contract with America” in 1994 and served as House Speaker from 1995 to 1999.
