Gay Marriage Watch: November 2nd-November 8th

Here's the latest news on gay marriage from around the world. The big story this week, of course, is the election - we're thrilled that Obama is the President Elect. But we're crushed by the wins of bigotry in Florida, Arizona, and California - especially California, where voters took away the existing right to marriage after a campaign filled with lies and half-truths, but gave new rights to chickens. It just reinforces what second class citizens we are here in the Golden state. Much of the funding for Yes on 8 came from the Mormon Church, so check out this great site, Mormons Stole Our Rights.
In addition to the news of the week, you'll find our weekly woody award, links to some great articles and columns from the last seven days, and of course you'll also find our ongoing recap of gay marriage happenings worldwide over the last four months - for a longer history, just click on one of the older Gay Marriage Watch blogs from our archives. To subscribe to this blog, or if you have any thoughts about how we can make this feature better or easier to use or any updates on the issues covered here, let me know at info@purpleunions.com.

This Week's Woody Award:

This week's Woody award honors goes to the people of California, Arizona, and Florida who wrote discrimination into their constitutions in this week's election, many of whom tried to reason their way out of homophobia. And if you think Prop 8 was not about rights for gays but was just a referendum on the meaning fo the word marriage, read these real comments from the supporters of and voters for Prop 8 this last week:

  • "Same sex marriage is a sin."
  • "I played a lot of football, and it feels like the day after a big game."
  • "It's straight biblical. It's just not right."
  • "There was no pretense of tolerance. There was vandalism. There was violence. There was bigotry and outright hostility toward religion. It was just hateful. And none of rhetoric on our side was hateful. It was about what we support. It was about what is important."
  • ""We believe that (opposition to) Prop. 8 was an attack on our sacred way of family and life."
  • "I was born black. I can't change that. They weren't born gay; they chose it."
  • Civil rights, he said, "are about getting a job, employment." Gay marriage, he said, is not: "It's an abomination against God."
  • She voted for "all the good things," especially Obama and Proposition 8. "I don't think it's right. They shouldn't let it go on."
  • "You CANNOT place a gay lifestyle, nor could you place a heterosexual lifestyle on the same playing field as a person's RACE!!!! This completely insulting, and just plain ridiculous."
  • "It is offensive to proliferate a lie about being born with a sexual orientation, as none of us are. Furthermore, Civil rights do not apply to depravity."
  • "How can there be Gay rights, when Gays don't really exist. They are a group of people with a certain desire. They can disappear at will with a haircut, and a change of clothing. Find a new mate and take on a new identity within minutes."
  • "do we really need to explain? im from san diego and im tired of gays. its everyones personal choice and the people have spoken. if they want to get married to bad they can fly to mass. for that bullshit."
  • "We anti-gay marriagists would argue that is unfair, for the rejection of gay marriage has nothing to do with rejecting gays as individuals."
  • "Maybe if they don’t use that word, marriage."

And here are some of the rationalizations they used to paper over homophobia:

  • "...because I believe in [Prop 8's] principles, not because I'm voting against their rights to be included under the umbrella of marriage because they happen to be gay.''
  • "We aren't trying to change anything that homosexual couples believe or want -- it doesn't change anything that they're allowed to do already. It's defining marriage.... Marriage is a man and a woman establishing a family unit."
  • ''This was not about being against anyone.''
  • "Without men and women uniting in marriage we would have no posterity and family units which make up a prosperous society. I am not anti gay and but do feel a moral responsibility to uphold the definition of traditional marriage as man and woman."
  • "I don't want a man and a man to be married. When I have kids, I don't want them to see that." Still, he says he doesn't hate gay people and has several gay friends.

As John Stewart said recently, I have news for you. Your gay friends hate you. Enjoy your woody, everyone who voted to take away rights from a select group of citizens.

Runner up is Salt Lake City-based church elder L. Whitney Clayton, who says the church is genuinely concerned about the emotional divide created by the gay marriage issue and says he hopes people will treat each other with civility and respect. Sorry, Mister Clayton, but we're not too concerned with your emotions. Not after you and your church trampled all our community last week. You don't get to spit on us and then say "why can't we all just get along?" No woody for you.
