Gay Marriage Watch: May 11th-May 17th

Hi all,

Here's the weekly update of everything we could find about the fight over Gay Marriage. The big story: The California Supreme Court, on a 4-3 vote, did the right thing and legalized gay marriage in California - as California residents, we are thrilled, but cautiously optimistic, too, that the proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage will fail here in November.

If you have any thoughts about how we can make this feature better or easier to use, or any updates on the issues covered here, let me know at info@purpleunions.com.

This week's Woody award honors go to Mitt Romney for decrying the California Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, saying he was unhappy "to see one more time a one-vote majority of a state Supreme Court overturn the will of its people. That is simply wrong.". Hmmm... like 8 years ago when the US Supreme Court overruled the will of the people by one vote to install W as president? Mitt, you're a hypocrite and a fraud, and you've earned our Woody of the Week!

Enjoy the rest of the Watch!

Hi,

I have a correction and an amplification for you regarding Washington State.

Washington State has state registered Domestic Partnerships and not Civil Unions as your post indicates.

According to the University of Washington Statewide Voter Survey conducted in October 2007, which I believe is the source you are citing, the majority of Washingtonians (59.4%) think that gay and lesbian couples should have exactly the same rights as straight couples.

But let's not lose that the vast majority of Washingtonians (73.5%) think that gay and lesbian couples should have some or all of the benefits and protections of marriage.
